The new face of “Islamic terrorism” in India!
Published on September 22nd, 2008 In Uncategorized |  Views 310

The investigation, into the bomb-blasts that rocked Indian cities including the Indian Capital, killing of hundreds of innocent people, injuring thousands of more innocent people including ladies and children,  exposes many alarming aspects of young Islamic students involved in such heinous acts of terrorism. The Indians could remember only the earlier Mohammedan invasions, that had led to such killings and atrocities.

Laptop mystery: One of the photos recovered from the laptop of Atif, the alleged mastermind behind the Delhi blasts, shows Sajid (right) who was also killed in Friday’s encounter. The photos were released on Sunday. NEW DELHI: Mohammad Bashir alias Atif, the alleged mastermind behind the Delhi serial blasts who was killed in a gun battle with the police at Batla House here this past Friday, was keen on carrying out back-to-back terror attacks.

“Atif would get restive if there were no blasts for a long time. He would ask members of his module to do something saying the newspapers were looking very dull. He had also told Mohammad Shakeel about his plans to carry out 20 more blasts in the Capital in the near future,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H.G.S. Dhaliwal.

Shakeel and two accomplices, Zia ur Rehman and Saqib Nissar, were arrested by the South Delhi police at Jamia Nagar in the early hours of Sunday for their alleged involvement in the recent serial blasts in the Capital.

The trio reportedly told the police that they would assemble at a place after every serial blast and assess the performance of each one of them in terms of the damage inflicted.

Surfing news channels “Each member was assigned a separate place to plant the bomb and they would all return to their hide-out after the blasts to discuss their impact. They would surf news channels to find out whose bomb caused the maximum damage,” said Mr. Dhaliwal.

Atif, who was feared by members of his module, would plan the explosions to the minutest detail. He told members of his module what clothes to wear and whether or not they should shave on the day of the blasts.

Trusted Shakeel “Atif did not discuss his plans with his module members except their individual roles in the blasts. But he trusted Shakeel, a cousin of his childhood friend Shadab, and confided in him. Atif spoke to him about his future plans, composition of e-mails and even mentioned the failed serial bomb attack in Surat. But he was discreet enough not to tell Shakeel anything about the source of funds and weapons,” said Mr. Dhaliwal.

Gorakhpur blasts The interrogation of Saif Ahmad, who was arrested during Friday’s encounter, also revealed the alleged involvement of Atif in the Varanasi temple and the Gorakhpur blasts in November last.

“Atif, Saif and Junaid (who had escaped during the Delhi encounter) went to Varanasi to survey the place a day before the blasts. The blasts at Gorakhpur in November 2007 were also carried out by Atif and Saif who smuggled the explosives in milk containers,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh.

ANOTHER CRACKDOWN: The three suspected terrorists arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell being taken to the Patiala courts in New Delhi on Sunday. The arrests come close on the heels of the killing of two terrorists involved in the blasts.

The investigations are still underway in the Delhi blasts case. And, a lot more evidence will emerge after the forensic procedures are complete.

The Jaipur Police has also confirmed that Delhi blasts suspect Atif was behind blasts in the city.

However, NDTV has obtained exclusive details of some of the evidence against Atif, believed to be the mastermind of the Delhi blasts. The evidence has come primarily from Atif"s laptop, mobile phone and travel records. (Watch)

  • The Indian Mujahideen logo used in emails was stored on Atif"s laptop
  • The laptop had pictures of the members of Atif"s module
  • Ahmedabad blast clip was saved on his computer
  • It shows the two stolen cars used in the blasts
  • Mobile phone records show Atif was in touch with Tauqir, a SIMI operative who played a key role in Ahmedabad and Bangalore blasts
  • Records show Atif was present at the various blast sites in Delhi
  • Atif had carried the same mobile to AhemedabadAtif and his associates had booked their Ahmedabad tickets from Delhi"s Nizamuddin station. The police have the reservation slip written out by one of the suspects. Records show the group had left Ahmedabad at 4:45 pm on July 26, just before the blasts.

Atif"s mobile phone records show that he was in touch with Tauqir, a SIMI operative who played a key role in Ahmedabad and Bangalore blasts.

The records show Atif was present at the various blast sites in Delhi.

Delhi Police claim to have recovered fake voter identity cards, driving licences from Atif"s Jamia Nagar flat.

Saqib Nisar was arrested on September 21 from Jamia Nagar. A techie, Saqib (23) is accused of being part of the recce for Karol Bagh blasts and networking activities. He was an MBA student of Sikkim Manipal University of Distance Learning. (NDTV)

Zia-ur-Rehman was arrested on September 21 from Jamia Nagar. A third year BA student in Jamia Milia university, Zia (22) is accused of placing bombs in Connaught Place and on a cycle in Ahmedabad. Police claim he also provided logistical support to Atif. (NDTV)

Caught, dead, on the run … they all are India"s most wanted. Seven days after five blasts ripped through market areas across Delhi, the Delhi Police made one of the most sensational breakthroughs of recent times in India"s war against terror.

The cops claim to have cracked the conspiracy behind the murderous exploits of 13 young and educated men from Azamgarh. They say it was this module, the so-called Indian Mujahideen, that caused the spate of terror in Delhi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad this year.

Though the details about the 13 are still sketchy, the following profiles emerge from what is known about the terror suspects:

    Mohammad Atif aka Bashir

Status: Dead. Killed in Jamia Nagar encounter on 19 September.

The gang"s ringleader, Atif (24) was the one who lured his fellow and junior students from Azamgarh to terrorism. Using his laptop, he masterminded the Delhi, Ahmedabad and Jaipur blasts. Possibly in cahoots with Abdus Subhan Qureshi, aka Taqir, who leads the terror units of SIMI.

Though pursuing a PG diploma in Human Resource Development from Delhi"s Jamia Milia Islamia University, Atif was keenly interested in Al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden.

    Mohammad Saif aka Rahul Sharma

Status: Nabbed. Caught from Batla House in Jamia Nagar after the 19 September encounter.

Now singing in police custody, Saif, son of a Samjawadi Party leader, is accused of planting a dud bomb at Regal Cinema in Connaught Place. A student in his early twenties, Saif had no criminal record before he turned a terrorist.

    Zeeshan

Status: Nabbed. Caught after the Jamia Nagar encounter.

His studious background betrays no signs of his sinister mind. Zeeshan planted the bomb at Barakhamba Road in Connaught Place, leading to seven deaths. An Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) alumnus, Zeeshan was picked up late on 19 September night from Jhandewalan in west Delhi.

    Mohammed Sajid aka Pankaj

Status: Dead. Killed during the Jamia Nagar encounter.

Only 16-years old, he was the second Barakhmaba Road bomber along with Zeeshan.

    Junaid

Status: Escaped. Fled during the Jamia Nagar encounter.

He and Mohammad Atif planted the bombs at posh M-block market in Greater Kailash-I. The duo were also involved in the Varanasi blasts.

    Mohammad Shakeel

Status: Nabbed. Cops arrested him on 21 September from Jamia Nagar.

A final year MA Economics student at Jamia, Shakeel (24) is accused of placing bombs in Gaffar market in Karol Bagh. He and Atif were planning to bomb busy Nehru Place in south Delhi. Shakeel was something of an ideologue for the group.

    Zia-ur-Rehman

Status: Nabbed. Cops arrested him on 21 September from Jamia Nagar.

A third year BA student in Jamia Milia university, Zia (22) is accused of placing bombs in Connaught Place and on a cycle in Ahmedabad. Police claim he also provided logistical support to Atif.

    Saqib Nisar

Status: Nabbed. Cops arrested him on 21 September from Jamia Nagar.

A techie, Saqib (23) is accused of being part of the recce for Karol Bagh blasts and networking activities. He was an MBA student of Sikkim Manipal University of Distance Learning.

    Shahzad alias Pappu

Status: Escaped. Fled during the Jamia Nagar encounter.

He is believed to have planted bomb in Central Park, Connaught Place.

    Alihas Malik

    Status: Absconding.

    Mohammad Khalif

    Status: Absconding.

    Arif

The terrorists nabbed in Delhi are a far cry from the popular image of a terrorist. No beard, no skull cap and certainly not rustics who would stand out in a city crowd.

Instead, the new faces of terror in India are outwardly, at least a bunch of regular youths-educated, aspiring to go places and therefore pursuing degrees in management and computer sciences, attributes that helped them mask their real intentions.

These young, ambitious young men could be your next door neighbours but are also the men suspected to be the terrorists who triggered bomb blasts across India in the last six months killing more than 140 people.

They lead a normal, almost anonymous life, behaved like average young men in modern India, more interested in girl friends, mobiles and computers.

But police say, this persona is a deliberate smokescreen.

So far, only Tauqueer, the alleged leader of Indian Mujahideen, was spoken about as the most tech-savvy terrorist in India. Community leaders fear this could impair Muslim prospects for jobs.

“The terror incidents are going to impact students the most," said Maulana A Rashad, head of Madarsa, Azamgarh.

This radical change in the profile of a terrorist has made the police and intelligence agencies nervous. Earlier, it was enough for intelligence field operatives to keep a close watch on Muslim ghettos and madarsas to look for suspects, like it was in the case of the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

Today, a SIMI or an Indian Mujahideen member takes extra precautions to be a model citizen and escape attention.

“These days, young educated men get swayed by propoganda are brainwashed into believing in terror. This is worrisome," said Arun Bhagat, former IB chief.

For years, the police had safely assumed that only rural youth could be indoctrinated and trained to spread terror but as recent events suggest, old theories and profiles are no longer valid.

Today, the man next door, who is equally at ease in a mall as he is adept in making a bomb, could turn out to be a terrorist, making it that much more tougher for the police to keep a tab on them.

Delhi Police may have neutralised one of the “masterminds" of the bombings in the capital on last Saturday but what police are worried about are the whereabouts of eight more terrorists, including a 10-year-old boy, who are on the run and who apparently assembled the bombs detonated in New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Hyderabad.

“A 10-year-old boy was among those 10 people who designed, planned and assembled bombs that went off on September 13 in Delhi, July 26 in Ahmedabad, May 13 in Jaipur and Aug 25, 2007 in Lumbani Park in Hyderabad," a top official of Delhi Police, involved in investigation of the explosions, said.

“The boy was with the terrorist group of the Indian Mujahideen led by Atiq that travelled to Ahmedabad three days before the blasts and assembled bombs there on the direction of Abdul Subhan Qureshi alias Taqueer," the official added, pleading anonymity.

The official said there was not much information about the boy and his family. “We don"t much know how this boy got involved with terrorists. First we don"t have any substantial information on Indian Mujahideen and now involvement of this boy has raised alarms among other security agencies as well."

“We also cannot say how many more children are part of the Indian Mujahideen," the officer added.

According to police officials, the group stayed at the house of one of the SIMI (the banned Student Islamic Movement of India) activists Imran, who was later arrested by the Gujarat police for the Ahmedabad serial blasts that killed at least 56 people and injured over 150.

“Before the bombs went off in Ahmedabad the entire group boarded the Rajdhani (Express) train back to Delhi at 4.45 p.m. the same day. They all were seated in the second air-conditioned coach," said another top official, showing copies of the duplicate train tickets.

“The group returned to Delhi but this time they were accompanied by two more people - one from Indore and the other from western Uttar Pradesh," the senior official told IANS.

The two, said to be expert car thieves, had stolen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R cars in which the explosives were packed and kept in two hospitals in Ahmedabad.

      Receptionist identifies Saif

Staff Reporter in The Hindu dated Wednesday, Sep 24, 2008

      http://www.hindu.com/2008/09/24/stories/2008092458380100.htm

Manipal: A day after the Delhi police team visited Manipal with the suspected terrorist Saif Ahmad, the people at the hotel where he stayed, and at the PCO from where he made a call, gave their version of the events on August 29, when Saif checked in here. They also spoke about the events which took place on September 22.

Saif stayed in room 207 at Hotel New Broadway International under a false name. Receptionist Prakash said he had given his name as Rahul Sharma. He came with another person, whose identity is not known.

The two checked in at 2.45 a.m. and vacated it at 7.15 p.m. the same day. Saif, who gave a Delhi address, stated that he had come to secure admission to an educational institution.

The Delhi police made Saif sign his name and verified it with the signature in the lodge ledger.

“The ledger has been taken by the police for their enquiry. The Delhi police, who visited this place on September 22, told me that I should cooperate in the investigation,” Prakash said.

The owner of the hotel, Krishnan Nair, said he had not seen Saif. The address given by him was: Rahul Sharma, L-188, Lajpat Nagar, Delhi. The mobile number given was 09811224306. The room was booked by a receptionist, Mariappa, who worked in the night shift that day.

Mr. Nair said the Delhi police asked for details of Saif’s visit. “Mariappa could not identify him. But Prakash identified him after checking the signatures.”

Raids in Azamgarh for terror suspects

Special Correspondent in The Hindu dated Wednesday, Sep 24, 2008
      http://www.hindu.com/2008/09/24/stories/2008092458540100.htm

Bank accounts checked, 6 persons questioned

LUCKNOW: Simultaneous raids were conducted by a 22-member Delhi police team in the Kotwali police station area and Sarjanpur village in Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Tuesday to flush out Shadab Bhai and Asadullah, alleged to have been involved in the September 13 blasts in the Capital.

The raids were conducted on the basis of evidence provided by an alleged terrorist, Saqib, who was held at Jamia Nagar in South Delhi on Sunday in connection with the Uttar Pradesh blasts.

Additional Director-General (Law and Order and STF), Brij Lal, told newsmen here that the raids yielded nothing.

The Delhi police had contacted the SSP of Azamgarh, R.K. Sharma, before the raids, Mr. Lal said.

About half a dozen terrorists were holed up in and around Azamgarh, the U.P. police officer said.

During the investigation, the bank accounts of Shadab Bhai and Mohammad Saif, who was arrested by the Delhi police after last week’s shootout at Jamia Nagar, were checked by the Delhi police team, the U.P. Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the Azamgarh police.

Mr. Lal said about Rs.32,000 was found in the account of Shadab Bhai. While money was deposited in Azamgarh, since May 2007 money had been withdrawn from the State Bank of India ATM in Delhi, although the transaction was not heavy ranging from Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000, the ADG said.

The Delhi police also questioned six persons, all of whom belonged to Azamgarh. They were later let off, Mr. Lal said.

The persons questioned were Javed Akhtar, a medical practitioner, his son Abdullah Akhtar, Saifullah Akhtar, Azeem Ahmed, Fakhre Alam, who is also a doctor, and Arslaan Khan.

Raids were reported to have been conducted in the Khadra locality of Lucknow by the ATS late on Monday night to arrest three youths said to be from Azamgarh. They were not found, though the house owner, reports said, was detained by the police. These raids were not confirmed by the ADG (Law and Order).
